Kindergarten

Academics Careful attention is given to providing a smooth transition from preschool to kindergarten. A primary goal is to help our students develop the skills for successful learning. This is done in a safe and nurturing atmosphere in which each child further develops cognitive, social and fine motor skills. The kindergarten program recognizes the developmental differences in children and is structured for individualized attention.

Grades 1-5

Academics

Language Arts - Word attack and comprehension skills are emphasized in the basal reading program. The introduction to a variety of literature increases our students' joy of reading. Included in the language arts program are mastery of spelling skills, vocabulary development, English grammar, listening skills and oral and written expression.

Math - The foundation of our math program is based upon the learning of basic facts, concepts and computational skills. The use of manipulatives and other materials are used to develop reasoning and problem solving abilities.

Academics

Social Studies - The goal of our social studies program is to increase students' awareness, knowledge and respect for the world around them and to help prepare them in becoming responsible citizens. History, geography and research skills are included at each grade level. Hands-on projects complement the classroom curriculum.

Academics

Science - Our study of science encompasses observation, experimentation and exploration through use of the scientific method. The annual Science Fair gives every student the opportunity to experience and share the joy of discovery. Science specialists provide the instruction for grades 3-5 and provide hands-on enrichment classes for grades 1-2.

Computer Lab - Woodcrest recognizes the need for computer literacy in our technological society. Our compter lab is fully equipped with 22 state-of-the-art computers with high speed internet access. Each class receives formal instruction from our computer specialist on a weekly basis. Keyboarding is added to the third through fifth grade curriculum as an additional class.

Physical Education - Motor Development, Sportsmanship, Cooperation and Teamwork - these are primary goals of our physical education program. Woodcrest's physical education program includes: fitness, sports, swimming and dance.
